Welcome to the world of Shareware, state of the art software you can
actually try before you buy.

Shareware, a term coined in the early eighties, refers to the method of
distribution chosen by the software authors. With shareware, you can
receive a program and put it through its paces without having to pay for
it. If you find the program useful, and choose to keep the program, then
you pay a modest registration fee to the author.

For the last nine years, PC-SIG has been providing shareware and public
domain software to its customers and members. Since 1982 PC-SIG has
developed an unprecedented library of shareware programs, constantly
updated, consistently strong in every category. Our library of
shareware contains over 2700 titles divided into 120 logical categories.

Every program we add to the library is thoroughly reviewed and tested to
insure that each one meets the high standards of reliability and value we
insist upon and you expect. As a result, our library doesn't contain
every shareware program available, just those that really work.

PC-SIG has grown into the premier distributor of shareware and and
shareware information by producing shareware collections on CD-ROM,
publishing an encyclopedia of shareware, and by publishing Shareware
Magazine, a bi-monthly magazine distributed world-wide.

Quality and support - guaranteed. All of our programs are guaranteed
virus free. We've isolated our systems and check every program
submitted to insure that no viruses make their way to your computer or
ours.

Our support staff is available by phone as well as on our BBS to help
you with questions about installation and operation of PC-SIG's
products.

Through our network of international distributors, PC- SIG strives to

OVERVIEW:

Sentry version 2 is an updated version of the original Sentry
product. It now runs on DOS 4.0 and above, and it has additional
checks for partition table viruses. In operation, however, it is
identical to the original version. If you currently are running
Sentry, the only modification required is to re-install using the
new install routine. Everything else is identical.

I have designed and marketed an number of antiviral products
commercially through InterPath Corporation, some with more
success than others. I have also researched and tested every
antiviral product available in both the commercial and public
domain markets. All of them (including my own) were less than
satisfying. They left me with a sense of unease about the
security of my system, or alternately, were so difficult to
install and use that I would rather suffer the virus than the
product. My answer to this problem is Sentry.
Sentry uses a unique approach to the virus issue. Prior
products have used TSR filters to attempt to trap viruses, or
checksums to detect changes in critical files. The TSR approach
has numerous weaknesses, primarily because TSRs cannot prevent
viruses from directly interfacing with the system I/O
controllers. Thus, over half of existing viruses cannot be
stopped or detected by such products. The interrupt vectoring
techniques of these products are easily circumvented by viruses.
The checksum approach, on the other hand is very time consuming
and awkward to implement. Both techniques are troublesome to
install and execute.
Sentry relies on a characteristic of viruses that has been
overlooked by other product developers. That characteristic is
called the "Positioning Rule". This rule relates to how viruses
attach to programs. Very simply, viruses may attach to the
beginning, to the end or to the middle of a program, or any
combination of the three. They may fragment themselves and
scatter virus segments throughout the program. Or they may even
keep the main body of the virus unattached to the program, hidden
in a bad sector for example. All viruses that have been
discovered, however, have modified at least some small portion of
the beginning instructions of the program. This is because a
virus must be executed first, that is - before the host program
to which it has attached. If the virus does not execute before
its host program, then the environment in which the virus "wakes
up" will be uncertain, and the probability of program failure
will be high.
The exceptions to this positioning rule are viruses that
replace the entire program, such as boot sector infectors, and
viruses that attack only specific programs, like known operating
system files or other programs that would be commonly found in
large numbers of systems. These viruses may gain control at any
point, since the structure of the host program is well known and
the environment can be predicted at any point in the host
program's processing.
The implications of this principal are very important.
Sentry takes advantage of this characteristic to radically speed
up the checking function. If every byte of every program is
processed by a checksum or other comparison technique, then
scanning the entire system for a virus takes a substantial time
to complete (15 minutes to an hour), and it is impractical to
perform this function frequently. As a result, previous virus
products could not effectively perform this function.
Sentry, on the other hand, employs a technique that locates
the initial instructions and branch addresses for each generic
program in the system and logs critical information about these
locations. It is able to scan the entire system for a virus over
200 times faster than global checksum techniques. As a result,
it is now practical to check the entire system each time the
system boots. This normally takes less than 20 seconds for the
average system.
Sentry is installed by simply typing the install command.
There is nothing else the user ever needs to do. Install
automatically logs ALL components of the system that can be hosts
to a virus and places an automatic check function in your
autoexec. If you ever do get a virus, Sentry will list any and
all components of the system that are affected. That's all there
is to it.

                             SENTRY VERSION 2.0

                               USER'S MANUAL

HOW IT WORKS:

SENTRY is a computer virus detection system that catches
viruses that have entered your system. It uses a high
reliability detection mechanism that monitors all system areas
that are susceptible to viral attacks. If a virus does enter
your system, SENTRY will identify the specific system area or
program files that have been infected, so that virus removal is
simplified.
SENTRY executes in two phases. The initial install phase
logs the system's hardware and software parameters - including
the initial interrupt vector states, boot sector instructions,
hidden DOS files, device drivers and all executable code on the
hard disks. Initial load instructions, branch addresses, and
other program states are also logged for each program on the hard
disk. The subsequent check phase executes each time the system
is powered on or re-booted, and it checks all system parameters
for traces of infection.
SENTRY is fully effective in detecting viruses, including
boot sector infectors and imbedded viruses (viruses that the
leave the infected program's size and external indicators
unchanged). It provides a timely and near foolproof indication
of infection.

INSTALLATION:

SENTRY must be installed on your bootable hard drive. If
your system contains multiple hard drives, they may also be
included in the SENTRY logging and monitoring function. To
install SENTRY on a system with one hard drive (C:), type:

               STINSTAL C:

SENTRY will load and then display a message that it is going
to automatically re-boot the system. At this point, you must
remove diskettes from the A drive and any other floppies that are
in any drives. When the floppies have been removed, press any
key to allow SENTRY to begin installation.
If you have more than one hard drive in your system, you
should include them in the installation by typing the drive
designations after the boot drive. For example:

               INSTALL C: D: E:

would install C: as the boot drive and also include D: and E: as
drives to be logged and monitored for viral infections.
The SENTRY installation will re-boot your system and then
begin its logging function. It will create a log file called
SENTRY.LOG and store it at the root of your boot disk. It will
then install the SENTRY check routine at the root of your boot
disk and include it as the first program in your autoexec.bat
routine. SENTRY.COM MUST REMAIN THE FIRST INSTRUCTION IN YOUR
AUTOEXEC IN ORDER TO OPERATE CORRECTLY.
The SENTRY installation process may take 10 minutes or more
for systems with large numbers of files - the daily check
function however, will execute many times faster. After the
installation has completed, the system's autoexec file will be
re-executed in order to return the system to its state prior to
installation.
The SENTRY.LOG file will take approximately 10K of disk
space plus 100 bytes for each executable program on the disks.

RE-INSTALLATION

SENTRY monitors the system each time the system is powered
on or re-booted and checks for modifications to key system
parameters. If the system has been purposely modified, SENTRY
may flag the changed areas as possibly infected. The following
system modifications will cause SENTRY to issue a warning:

          - Installing a new version of DOS
          - Removing or adding a device driver to CONFIG.SYS
          - Deleting a program
          - Replacing a program with a different version

If any of the above have occurred, SENTRY should be re-
installed. To re-install, follow the same instructions as for
initial installation. The original SENTRY.LOG file will be
replaced with the new log file containing the new system data.

OPERATION

The SENTRY check function compares the ongoing state of your
system to the original "snapshot" state. A copyrighted, proprietary
algorithm checks ALL executable programs on your system for viral
modifications. The algorithm is able to do this in a reasonable
amount of time due to a selective logging function. This logging
function logs only those segments of program code and other
variables that would be affected by any virus attack. "Inert"
sections of programs are removed from the checking process.
SENTRY also checks the entire boot sector and all system
interrupt routines for modifications. Finally, system device
drivers and operating system hidden files are checked.
The SENTRY check function executes each time the system is
powered on or re-booted. If a discrepancy in any area of the
system is noted, the check function will pause and display a
message identifying the system area and the discrepancy. If no
discrepancies are found, the check function will terminate with
an OK message. The check function will require about 10 seconds
for each 100 executable programs stored on your hard disk.

IF A VIRUS IS FOUND

Important: If any virus is discovered by SENTRY, first note the
names of the infected programs or system areas. Then immediately
power down the system. Re-boot the system from the original DOS
distribution diskette prior to attempting to remove the virus.

There are three general classes of PC viruses: Boot
infectors, system infectors and program infectors. Each class of
virus will typically affect different areas of the system and
require different approaches to removal.
Generally, viruses can be removed by deleting or overwriting
the affected portion of the disk, and replacing the infected
component. For program infectors (viruses that infect general
.COM or .EXE files), this is a fairly simple process. SENTRY
will identify each program that has been infected (program size,
date, or internal components have changed). Simply erase the
infected programs and replace them from the original distribution
diskettes.
Boot infectors replace or modify a disk's boot sector.
SENTRY will identify an infected boot sector with a "Boot Sector
Infection" message. This type of virus requires that the boot
sector be replaced using the DOS "SYS" command. See your DOS
manual for instructions for the SYS command.
System infectors attach to COMMAND.COM, IBMBIO.COM,
IBMDOS.COM or any installable device drivers. SENTRY will
identify such viruses by naming one of the above files or by
specifying that the system interrupt vectors have changed. To
remove this type of virus, erase the affected files, then perform
a SYS command as above. Finally, replace any affected device
drivers.
In all of the above cases, re-install SENTRY after virus
removal.

If SENTRY detects an infection, and you have any concerns or
questions, contact InterPath at the number and address at the end
of this document.

EXTRA PRECAUTIONS

To prevent any possibility of viral tampering with the
SENTRY program and log file, you should copy the files SENTRY.COM
and SENTRY.LOG from the root of your boot disk to a backup floppy
immediately after installing SENTRY. Periodically (each month or
so) you should copy these two files from the floppy back to the
root of your boot disk.

FOR ADVANCED USERS

SENTRY defaults to a global scan a check of all system
components. You may however, restrict its operation in a number
of areas:

Using the /s option:

     STINSTAL c: /s d:\temp, d:\masm, c:\prod

This command string would install SENTRY so that it ignored
all activities in the three directories named.

Using the /i option:

     STINSTAL c: d: /i

This command string would install SENTRY on drives D: and C:
and would instruct SENTRY to ignore any modifications in the
interrupt vectors caused by changes in the operating system
environment. If you frequently modify your config.sys files, or
change out system device drivers you may want to use this option.

Using the /b option:

     STINSTAL c: /b

This option tells SENTRY to ignore boot sector logging. You
must use this option if running on a Zenith laptop.

Using the /L option:

     STINSTALL c: /L a:frog.log

This option creates a second log file.

VALIDATE.DOC

                      VALIDATE Version 0.2
					From McAfee Associates 408 988 3832

VALIDATE is a file authentication program that may be used to
check shareware and other software for signs of tampering. The
program uses two different methods to generate CRC checks for
designated files and displays the results. The dual CRC checks
ensures a high level of security. The results may then be compared
with validation data published by the author or obtained from any
reliable information source. The Computer Virus Industry
Association, for example, maintains an on-line validation service
for participating shareware authors. You may contact the CVIA
bulletin board at 408 988 4004 to access up-to-date validation data
for VIRUSCAN, SCANRES, SHEZ, LIST and other shareware programs.
You need only run VALIDATE against the program in question, obtain
the authentication numbers and compare those numbers to the ones
on file in the on-line data base. If they match, you can be
assured that the program has not been tampered with.

	To run VALIDATE, type:

		VALIDATE d:\path\filename.ext

The program will display the following validation information:

			     Size: (Number of Bytes)
			     Date: (File Creation Date)
	File Authentication:
		Check Method 1 - (4 digit CRC)
		Check Method 2 - (4 digit CRC)

You may copy and distribute this program at no charge. We ask
that you distribute the program with this documentation. Please
report virus infection and verified instances of tampering to:

   McAFEE ASSOCIATES BUSINESS/INSTITUTION/GOVERNMENT LICENSE

NOTICE TO USERS ("COMPANY"): CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING
LEGAL AGREEMENT. COMPANY'S USE OF THIS SOFTWARE IS CONDITIONED
UPON COMPLIANCE BY COMPANY WITH THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT. THE
SOFTWARE MAY BE EVALUATED FOR FIVE DAYS ON A ROYALTY FREE BASIS.
CONTINUED USE AFTER EVALUATION IS CONDITIONED UPON PAYMENT BY
COMPANY OF THE NEGOTIATED LICENSE FEE SPECIFIED IN A CONFIRMATION
LETTER FROM MCAFEE ASSOCIATES ("MCAFEE").

The Software may not be distributed by Company to any
outside corporation, organization or government agency. This
license authorizes Company to use the number of copies described
in the confirmation letter from McAfee and for which Company has
paid McAfee the negotiated license fee. If the confirmation
letter from McAfee indicates that Company's license is
"Corporate-Wide", this license will be deemed to cover copies
duplicated and distributed by Company for use on any additional
incremental machines purchased or leased by Company during the
Term, at no additional charge. This license will remain in
effect for two years from the date of the confirmation letter
from McAfee authorizing such continued use or such other period
as is stated in the confirmation letter (the "Term"). If Company
does not obtain a confirmation letter and pay the applicable
license fee, this license expires at the end of the five day
evaluation period. All updates must be accessed and downloaded
from McAfee's bulletin board, the McAfee Virus Forum on
CompuServe or McAfee's Internet node. Access instructions for
the Company's licensed user bulletin board are included in the
confirmation letter. In the case where Company is licensing more
than 50 copies of the Software, all updates will also be provided
in diskette form at no charge as they occur or quarterly,
whichever is less frequent, during the term of this license.

I. SINGLE POINT OF CONTACT. Support for Software bug reports
and other product issues will be handled through a single point
of contact within the Company. Company shall identify the
contact individual when placing its order with McAfee or McAfee's
Authorized Agent. There will be no charge for support of the
Software when channelled through such individual. Support
requests from other organizational areas will be billed at normal
hourly support rates.

II. INFECTION SUPPORT. Telephone, BBS, CompuServe and Internet
support for virus infections is available at no additional
charge. On-site support may be obtained from a McAfee Authorized
Agent, as available, at a negotiated hourly rate plus travel time
and expenses.

III. EMPLOYEE HOME USE OPTION. In the case where Company is
licensing more than 50 copies of the Software, McAfee will
license the Software for home use by employees if requested by
Company, in writing, within the first year of the license. The
cost for this option is 20% of the standard site license fee for
that number of employee home use machines.

IV. GENERAL TERMS.

COPYRIGHT. The Software is protected by United States
copyright laws and international treaty provisions. Company
acknowledges that no title to the intellectual property in the
Software is transferred to Company. Company further acknowledges
that full ownership rights to the Software will remain the
exclusive property of McAfee or its suppliers, and Company will
not acquire any rights to the Software except as expressly set
forth in this license. Company agrees that any copies of the
Software made by Company will contain the same proprietary
notices which appear on and in the Software.

REVERSE ENGINEERING. Company agrees that it will not
attempt, and will use its best efforts to prevent its employees
from attempting to reverse compile, modify, translate or

limited warranty above ("Limited Warranty"), McAfee's entire
liability and Company's sole and exclusive remedy shall be, at
McAfee's option, either to (a) correct the error, (b) help
Company work around or avoid the error or (c) authorize a refund,
so long as the Software is destroyed by Company. The Limited
Warranty is void if failure of the Software has resulted from
accident, abuse, or misapplication. Any replacement Software
will be warranted for the remainder of the original Limited
Warranty period.

NO OTHER WARRANTIES. MCAFEE DOES NOT WARRANT THAT
THE SOFTWARE IS ERROR FREE, IDENTIFIES ALL KNOWN VIRUSES OR MAY NOT
OCCASIONALLY REPORT A VIRUS IN A FILE NOT INFECTED BY THAT VIRUS.
EXCEPT FOR THE EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY ABOVE, MCAFEE DISCLAIMS ALL
OTHER WARRANTIES WITH RESPECT TO THE SOFTWARE, EITHER EXPRESS OR
IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT
OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS.

SEVERABILITY. In the event of invalidity of any provision
of this license, the parties agree that such invalidity shall not
affect the validity of the remaining portions of this license.

MCAFEE OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL
OR INDIRECT DAMAGES OF ANY KIND ARISING OUT OF THE DELIVERY,
PERFORMANCE OR USE OF THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF MCAFEE HAS BEEN
ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. IN NO EVENT WILL
MCAFEE'S LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT OR
ANY OTHER THEORY OF LIABILITY, EXCEED THE LICENSE FEE PAID BY
COMPANY.

EXPORT. Company agrees that it will not export or re-export
the Software to North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Iran or Iraq without
the appropriate United States or foreign government licenses.

GOVERNING LAW. This Agreement will be governed by the laws
of the State of California as they are applied to agreements to
be entered into and to be performed entirely within California.
The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International
Sale of Goods is specifically disclaimed.

U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS. If the Software is
acquired (i) for use by DoD, use, duplication or disclosure by
the Government is subject to the terms of this license unless
superseded by 252.227-7013(c)(1)(ii) or (ii) for use by civilian
agencies, use, reproduction or disclosure is subject to the terms
of this license unless superseded by 52.227-19.

ENTIRE AGREEMENT. This Agreement together with any McAfee
confirmation letter constitute the entire agreement between
Company and McAfee which supersedes any prior agreement,
including any prior license from McAfee, or understanding,
whether written or oral, relating to the subject matter of this
Agreement. The terms and conditions of this Agreement shall
apply to all orders submitted to McAfee and shall supersede any
different or additional terms on purchase orders from Company.

Should you have any questions concerning this license
agreement, or if you desire to contact McAfee for any reason,

VALIDATE.DOC

                             VALIDATE Version 0.4
Copyright (C) 1989-1992 by McAfee Associates.
                              TEL (408) 988-3832

NOTE: VALIDATE version 0.4 is being released so that VALIDATE will
remain compatible with the /SAVE option of SCAN. The new /SAVE
option changes the SCAN.EXE file, and the new VALIDATE will be
able to compensate for the changes, so that the validation results
before and after the /SAVE switch will be identical. This in no
      way impairs the validating process.

VALIDATE is a file-authentication program that may be used to check
other programs for signs of tampering. VALIDATE uses two discrete methods
to generate Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRC's), which are then displayed for
the user to compare against the known value for the program(s) validated.
The known validation data can be published by the author of the program or
be obtained from a trusted information database. The dual CRC checking
provides a high degree of security.

To confirm that a program is in its original, untampered state, run
the VALIDATE program on it, record the validation data produced, and
compare it against the record in the online database. If they match, than
it is highly improbable that the program has been modified.

To run VALIDATE, type:

     VALIDATE d:\path\filename.ext

The VALIDATE program will then display the following information:

                   Size: (#/bytes)
                   Date: (file creation date)
    File Authentication
Check Method 1: (a four digit CRC)
Check Method 2: (a four digit CRC)

The VALIDATE program may be copied and distributed at no charge as
long as it is distributed whole and intact and unmodified in any way,
along with this file. Please report virus infections and reports of
program tampering to:

                   Size: 12,197
                   Date: 03-24-92

Total Number of Viruses, including variants: 1561

LEGEND:

Size Increase:
N/A - Virus does not attach to files.
None - Virus does not change file size (uses unused space in file or
             manipulates file linkages)
Overwrites - Virus overwrites beginning of file no file size change
All Others - The length in bytes by which a file will increase when infect

Damage Fields:
B - Corrupts or overwrites the boot sector
D - Corrupts data files
F - Formats or overwrites all/part of disk
L - Directly or indirectly corrupts file linkage
O - Affects system run-time operation
P - Corrupts program or overlay files

Characteristics:
x - Yes
. - No

Disinfectors:
Clean-Up - Clean-Up universal virus disinfector
SCAN /D - VIRUSCAN with /D option
SCAN /D /A - VIRUSCAN with /D and /A options
MDISK /P - MDISK with "P" option (See Note)
All Others - The name of disinfecting program

NOTES

SCAN /D OPTION

The SCAN /D options will overwrite and then delete the
entire infected program. The program must then be
replaced from the original diskette or a backup. Files
removed in this manner can not be recovered by UNDELETE
programs. If you wish to try and recover an infected
program then use the above-named disinfector.

MDISK

MDISK can be used to repair virus-infected master boot record
(partition table) code and boot sector code on DOS 3.00 to
4.01 partitioned diskettes. For replacing the MBR code on
MS-DOS 5.00 partitioned hard disks, use the FDISK.EXE program
with the undocumented /MBR switch.

OVERLAY-INFECTING VIRUSES AND THE /A OPTION

If a virus infects Overlay Files (Item 7) Clean-Up should
be used with the /A option when removing the virus.

GENERIC BOOT SECTOR [GENB], MBR [GENP] AND FAMILY [FAMx] VIRUSES

In order to detect non-specific (new or unknown) viruses, VIRUSCAN
contains code that will search files and system areas of a disk for
virus-like mechanisms. If such code is found in the Master Boot
Record (partition table), SCAN will report the presence of a Generic
Partition Table [GenP] virus. If such code is found in the DOS Boot
Sector, SCAN will report the presence of a Generic Boot Sector [GenB]
virus. If such a virus is reported, it can be removed by running
CLEAN-UP with the appropriate I.D. code, however, please forward a
copy of the virus to McAfee Associates for analysis prior to doing so.

Please note that some security and anti-viral programs which replace
the MBR with custom code may be reported as the [GenP] virus. If you
are running such a program, deinstall it and re-run VIRUSCAN.

The Family viruses are a number of viruses, usually very recent, using
standard viral code. SCAN is able to detect them through generic
detection, but CLEAN does not have the ability to remove those. As
with the GENB and GENP viruses, please forward a copy of an viruses of
this sort to McAfee Associates for analysis and identification.

OVERWRITING VIRUSES AND THE [OW] CLEAN-UP CODE
Viruses that overwrite sections of programs with their own code do
