Information about “UNITS VERSION 2.1”

UNITS is a menu-driven, technical units conversion program that
includes a review of six common systems of units and gives a number of
physical constants and relationships. What this means, in English, is
that the program converts units of measurement from one form to
another. For example, do you need to know how many millimeters are in
14.0 inches? UNITS can answer that question (355.6mm) and more.

                                ----------------

The following files should reside on your product diskette.

U-C.EXE Loads the UNITS program for color systems.

U-M.EXE Loads the UNITS program for monochrome systems.

        UNITS.EXE Main program.

        PLIC.EXE Prowess, Inc. license statement.

*.BAS This is a group of 73 files that contain the
conversion factors used by the UNITS program.

          -------------------------------------------------------------

                              SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

This program will run on the IBM-PC and all 100% compatibles. Both color and
monochrome systems are supported. All systems should have a minimum of 128 K
of memory and at least one floppy disk drive. The program is not copy protected
and may be installed on your hard disk.

          --------------------------------------------------------------

                                  PREPARATION
                                  -----------

First format a new diskette with the /S option.

EXAMPLE: FORMAT B:/S (assuming that a new diskette is
                                   installed in dirve B.)

Next, copy the contents of your UNITS product diskette to the newly
     formatted diskette.

EXAMPLE: COPY *.* B: (Assuming that you have the product
diskette in drive A and the newly
                                   formatted disk in drive B)

The new diskette will become your working copy, so protect your
investment and put the UNITS product diskette in a safe place.

Your working copy is ready to use. Label it UNITS.

              -----------------------------------------------------

                                 RUNNING UNITS
                                 -------------

Put your working copy of UNITS in drive A and make drive A the default drive.

If you have a color system, enter: U-C <return>

If you have a monochrome system, enter: U-M <return>

Whichever of these entry programs you use, you will see the Prowess, Inc. logo
screen followed by the license statement. Pressing any key, after reading the
license statement, will cause the UNITS program to load.

When the UNITS menu screen appears, we suggest that you first select the help
option (#11). The two help screens summarize the information that is needed to
operate the program successfully. Much of the information presented below is
duplicated in the help files. From the help screens, you will be returned to
the UNITS menu.

Next, select the "SYSTEMS OF UNITS", option #10. Two screens provide a review
of six different systems of units that are in common use. When working with
units, it is essential to be aware of the system of units in which you are
working. Helping you translate between these systems is one of the major
functions of this program. After viewing the second "system of units" screen,
you will return to the menu

Next, select "MISC. RELATIONSHIPS", option #9. This screen contains a random
selection of physical constants and miscellaneous relationships that are
commomly needed in technical work. After viewing this screen, you will be
returned to the UNITS menu.

The remaining menu selections, with the exception of "EXIT", deal with units
conversions. All of the units conversions work the same way. There are two
critical things to remember:

      1. DO NOT use the arrow keys to position cursor. Use ONLY the
         return key!!!!!

      2. Because units conversions deal with very small and very large numbers,
all answers will be presented in "D" format - double precision
         scientific notation.

               2.345D-09 should be read as 2.345 x 10^-9 or .000000002345

If your input is a decimal number, it will also be converted to the "D"
format. You may make entries in integer form, decimal form, use the "E"
format or use the "D" format. If you want to enter the number 1000, all
of the following input forms are acceptable:

                                    1000

                                    1000.000

                                    1E03 or 10E02 etc.

                                    1D03 or .100D04 etc.

For practice, select "LENGTH" from the UNITS menu (#3). A list of "length" units
will appear in the work field. Let's say that you want to convert .0067 Cm.
to Mils. Using the return key, move the cursor adjacent to the "CENTIMETER ="
row and enter .0067. When you press return, the units program will read the
appropriate conversion file and display the conversion of .0067 centimeters to
ALL other length units. From this list, you will find that .0067 centimeters =
2.6378D+00 Mils (or 2.6378 Mils).

Having your input converted to all other units is surprisingly useful. Many
times you will see relationships that would have gone unnoticed if you had
simply converted one unit to another!

Notice that your input was converted to "D" format. On color systems, your input
will be shown in a different color and will have an asterisk (*) shown to the
right of the number. This serves to remind you of the unit that you input. On
monochrome systems the asterisk, alone, serves this purpose.

After displaying the conversions, you may elect to return to the UNITS menu or
may input another value.

Both AREA and VOLUME selections have a basic geometry calculator associated with
them. By selecting the calculator function, you can find the area or volume of
simple geometries (rectangles, circles, spheres, boxes, cylinders, etc.). If you
use the calculator functions to find an area or volume, you may transfer the
calculated result to the units list by entering an "A" or "V" beside the
appropriate unit. When you press return, the calculated area or volume will
appear beside the selected unit and will be converted to all other units.

If you select the "VOLUME" option (#7), you can then select either "standard"
or "fluid" volumes. We define "standard" volumes as those volumes that usually
have names that begin with the word "cubic" (cubic inches, cubic yards, etc.)
and that typically are NOT thought of as exclusively fluid measures. Fluid
measure (liters, fluid oz., gallons, etc.) is handled separately. To allow for
translation between fluid and standard volumes, we have included cubic
centimeters (CCs) and cubic inches in the fluid measure section. This creates a
situation of which you should be aware. If you use the volume calculator to
calculate a volume, its result is in cubic units. You define the unit when you
transfer the calculated volume to the units list. Should you try to transfer a
calculated volume to a fluid unit (quarts, barrels, etc.), the program will not
let you do it. Trying to do that would be interpreted, by the program, as "cubic
quarts" or "cubic barrels", which would be nonsense. The program WILL let you
transfer a calculated volume to the cubic centimeters and cubic inch listings of
fluid units.

Since many of the conversion factors were derived with computer help and are the
result of many multiply and divide operations, possible roundoff errors limit
the conversion accuracy to four significant digits.

              -------------------------------------------------------

                            GENERAL OPERATION GUIDE
                            -----------------------

As with all Prowess, Inc. products, you can enter a 'Q' at most user
     inputs to exit the programs.

Options are selected by entering the capitalized letter in the option
word (usually the first letter). On color systems, this letter is
displayed in a different color. On some monochrome systems, you may
need to increase the display intensity to see the key letters in
     option words.

Unless instructed otherwise, DO NOT use the TAB key or ARROW keys to
position the cursor, or use commas or double quotes (") in your inputs!
In some circumstances, entering an unexpected character will result in
the error message "REDO FROM START". If this message appears, do not
attempt to reposition the cursor - simply make a correct input, at the
current cursor position. Although the screen will be "messy" until it is
redrawn, the program will proceed normally.
